How do I know when to replace my water heater?

Age is one factor, when a water heater is over 10 years old you may want to consider replacement. If the water heater is leaking or you get only one hot shower these are two other signs of failure. Other indicators are slow recovery, noisy operation, calcium buildup, or no hot water.

What's included in a basic installation?

A basic installation consists of the following tasks:

  • Delivery of new water heater to your home.

  • Disconnection of existing unit

  •  Installation of new water heater, installed in the same unobstructed area and reconnection of existing gas, electric, water and venting lines.

  • Up to 5 feet of discharge tube, gas and/or water pipe as needed to complete install

  • Conversion of water or gas lines from flex to solid pipe up to 5 feet if needed to complete install

  • Provision of nipples, couplings and copper tubing for direct reconnect

  • Testing of new water heater to insure proper operation

  • Final clean up of job site and walk-through with customer

  • Haul away of existing unit for disposal

Is a permit required when replacing a water heater?

Yes, a permit is required by the state of KY Plumbing Code.

How long does a water heater last?

Serveral factors determine the longevity of your hot water heater which include the quality of the water, The quality of the water heater, and if any annual mainentance was performed.  the average hot water heater typically last between 10 and 12 years. Vessels Plumbing also offers maintenance contracts to extend the life of your plumbing.

My kids take their showers and I never get a hot bath what is the problem?

The recovery rate of your water heater is too slow and the size of the tank is too small. If space allows you should increase the size of the tank. You may also want to install a high recovery water heater that is designed to heat faster.

I drained water from my water heater and this white stuff came out what is it?

Over time sediments or deposits of calcium and magnesium salts build up. If too much sediment builds up and adheres to the bottom of the tank the water heater may need to be replaced. These deposits rob you of both hot water and make it more costly to heat the water.

Do I have a high recovery water heater?

Fast recovery water heaters will have more than 40,000 BTU input. The ID plate will note high or fast recovery.

What does Energy Factor mean?

This is an indicator of the combined thermal efficiency and stand-by efficiency of a water heater. Any new gas water heater with an EEF of greater than 0.62 may qualify for a rebate.

Can I install a water heater myself?

It is recommended that you use a licensed, professional installer as the installation of a water heater deals with carbon monoxide, natural gas and a pressure-controlled holding tank. Any one of these factors could cause catastrophic damage and/or injury if the unit is not installed properly.  Be sure to use a trained professional who knows the necessary codes and safety factors. A permit is still required if you put in a hot water heater yourself.
